Understanding the Process and Benefits of MRI Scan

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a unique diagnostic tool that uses strong radio waves and magnets to produce high-quality pictures of internal body parts in multiple directions. It works by creating a strong magnetic field that attracts hydrogen atoms in the body. After that radio wave pulses are focused on those atoms in a particular body part.  With the help of computer, these radio signals can be converted into three-dimensional pictures that radiologists use to recognize small and unseen structures within body parts, joints or blood vessels.

MRI is a unique method to check the interior parts of the human body. In most of the cases, MRI gives significant diagnostic information that other medical imagining techniques like x-ray, CT scan cannot give.

Background of the MRI scanner:
The first full-body MRI scanner was invented by Prof. Raymond Damadian in the year 1977. At that time, it took around five hours to create the full body scan.

Process of MRI scanning:
A patient needs not to do any preparation for an MRI scan. After arriving at the healthcare centre, doctors may ask to wear a gown and remove all metal objects such as watch, clips, necklace or any jewelry from the body because magnets are used in the scanner that may impede the machine. Sometimes, doctors inject intravenous (IV) contrast liquid to the patient to improve the look of certain body tissue.
After entering in the scanning room, doctor will help you lie down onto the scanner. During the scan, it is very important for you to remain calm and still. Any movement of the body will disrupt the pictures. You will hear some noise coming from the machine, which is normal.
After the scanning, a radiologist will check your body images. The radiologist will make a report for your doctor, who will see the results.

MRI is useful for:
·         Examining the neck, brain and spinal cord
·         Recognizing damage of bone and joint
·         Revealing abnormalities of brain in people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
·         Diagnosis of disorder in central nervous system such as strokes and multiple sclerosis
·         Identifying breast cancer
·         evaluate blood vessels to recognize blockage areas

Book you appointment:
You can easily find many centers in all parts of the world which offer the service of medical imagining like MRI, CT scan or X-ray. If you are looking for a best center for MRI scan in Anchorage then with the help of Aetna network you can find many such centers. You can book your appointment online and talk to the experts for further queries.

  1. Eli, I learned a lot about the MRI process from your post. I didn't know that the first machine was invented all the way back in 1977. My wife is hoping to get an MRI scan and I will be sure to share this valuable information with her. http://www.hudsonvalleyimagingradiology.com/CT_Scans_Magnetic_Resonance_Imaging_New_Windsor_NY.html
